Whole-house prices, from published sources
- $1,500–$7,500: U.S. range to remove popcorn from 1,500 sq ft of ceiling, per Angi (updated Sep 29, 2026). Large homes with high ceilings can run $5,900 or more.
- $1.50–$5.50 per sq ft: a Tulsa-area removal company’s published list (UN-POP, checked Nov 2, 2026): $1.50 removal with a Level 3 drywall finish, $2.50 with knockdown, $5.50 with a smooth skim coat.
- ESTIMATE $2,250–$8,250 for 1,500 sq ft of ceiling at those Tulsa-area rates, before paint, painted-popcorn, asbestos or high-ceiling add-ons. Our arithmetic, not a quote.
Planning ranges from the sources named. Only a written estimate on your house is a real price.
Every number on this page comes from the source named next to it: Angi (updated Sep 29, 2026) or the published price list of UN-POP, a Tulsa-area removal company (checked Nov 2, 2026). Rows marked ESTIMATE are our own multiplication of those rates. Nothing here is a quote, and we don’t set prices.
Step 1: Measure Your Ceilings
For flat ceilings, ceiling area is about the same as floor area, so a single-story 1,500 sq ft house has roughly 1,500 sq ft of ceiling. Closets, vaulted rooms and stairwells change that, so the company will measure. Leave out rooms that are already smooth or knockdown.
Step 2: National Ranges by Ceiling Size
| Ceiling area | U.S. range (Angi) |
|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | $1,000–$5,000 |
| 1,500 sq ft | $1,500–$7,500 |
| 2,000 sq ft | $2,000–$10,000 |
Angi reports pros charging $1–$6 per sq ft, a national average project of $2,012, a typical range of $932–$3,092, and $5,900 or more for large homes with high ceilings.
Step 3: A Tulsa-Area Price List, Applied to a Whole House

| Package (UN-POP) | Published rate | 1,500 sq ft | 2,000 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removal + Level 3 drywall finish | $1.50 / sq ft | ESTIMATE $2,250 | ESTIMATE $3,000 |
| Removal + knockdown texture | $2.50 / sq ft | ESTIMATE $3,750 | ESTIMATE $5,000 |
| Removal + smooth skim coat | $5.50 / sq ft | ESTIMATE $8,250 | ESTIMATE $11,000 |
Estimates are the published rate × square footage, before any add-ons below. One company’s list, shown because it’s public and local. Other companies price differently.
Step 4: Add-Ons That Change the Total
| Item | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling paint | +$2.50 / sq ft | UN-POP |
| Prime and paint | $1–$3 / sq ft | Angi |
| Popcorn that has been painted | +$1.00 / sq ft | UN-POP |
| Coffered ceilings | +$0.25 / sq ft | UN-POP |
| Ceilings over 14 ft | Quoted separately | UN-POP |
| Asbestos test (homes built 1970–1985) | $50 | UN-POP |
| If asbestos-positive | +$3.00 / sq ft ($2,500 minimum) plus required +$1.00 / sq ft knockdown | UN-POP |
| Asbestos removal, national | $5–$20 / sq ft | Angi |
| Finish only, national: knockdown / smooth / orange peel | $1–$2 / $1.50–$2 / $0.80–$1.50 per sq ft | Angi |
ESTIMATE Example: 1,500 sq ft, knockdown, painted: 1,500 × ($2.50 + $2.50) = about $7,500 at the Tulsa-area list rates, before any asbestos or height add-ons. Our arithmetic only.
Single Rooms
Single rooms use the same per-foot logic, but many companies have a minimum charge, so small jobs cost more per square foot. At Angi’s $1–$6 per sq ft, a 12′ × 12′ bedroom (144 sq ft) would be about $144–$864 (ESTIMATE) before any minimum. If more rooms are likely later, get a whole-house price at the same time.
Compare Quotes on the Same Scope
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the price include asbestos testing? Who collects the samples and which lab? | You want a lab result before work starts. |
| Which finish is included: Level 3, knockdown, orange peel or smooth? | This is the biggest swing in price and final look. |
| Are primer and paint included? | Some quotes stop at “paint-ready.” |
| How do you protect floors, walls and the HVAC? | Containment separates a clean job from a house full of dust. |
| Who hauls away debris? | It should be included. |
| How do you price repairs found after scraping? | Agree on a per-item or hourly rate up front. |
| What’s the room-by-room schedule? | Plan where you’ll live and what furniture moves. |
| Are you insured? Lead-safe certified (pre-1978 homes)? | Protects you. Federal lead rules apply to pre-1978 homes. |
Timing Tips for Oklahoma
Joint compound dries slowest in humid weather, which can stretch smooth-finish schedules in summer. If the job is before a sale, leave time for drying, paint and touch-ups before listing photos.
